Emma Butler, the founder and CEO of Intimately.co, is on a mission to revolutionize the adaptive apparel industry for women with disabilities by empowering them through inclusive lingerie. The journey that led her to this path began in 2010 when her mother was diagnosed with multiple autoimmune disorders that left her disabled. This transformation in her mother's lifestyle became evident in her wardrobe requirements; she needed clothes that accommodated her new needs, particularly intimate wear.
The quest for stylish and functional undergarments faced a significant hurdle - the scarcity of options catering to women with disabilities. The avlable choices were predominantly unappealing, lacking style and catering predominantly to elderly demographics rather than empowering young, middle-aged, or pre-menopausal women. This experience resonated strongly with Emma, who upon further exploration realized this was not a unique issue for her mother alone.
As she embarked on her academic journey at Brown University, Emma conducted interviews with over 100 women with disabilities across various ages and medical backgrounds. Their narratives echoed the lack of consideration in fashion industry designs when it came to including people living with disabilities. This revelation underscored that there was a vast unmet need in the market.
Conceiving an innovative solution, Intimately.co was born - an online marketplace dedicated to offering adaptive apparel for all women. The brand focuses on creating fashionable and functional undergarments such as side opening underwear suitable for wheelchr users, period-absorbing underwear for hassle-free menstruation management, and bras designed with easy fasteners that cater specifically to limited mobility or breast cancer survivors.
The lingerie industry traditionally overlooks the needs of disabled individuals, often catering only to certn types of disabilities. Intimately.co understands that every body is unique and requires tlored solutions deping on different disabilities. The platform not only offers physical products but also fosters a community where women can share their experiences, offer advice or seek answers from others facing similar challenges.
With the vision of creating an inclusive environment for all women with disabilities to feel included, Intimately.co start an inclusion revolution in fashion. Join us in embracing this change and empowering women living with disabilities worldwide.
